Summary of the Accident
According to the Austin Police Department (APD), 911 operators received a call at approximately 4:24 p.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2023, reporting a crash between an SUV and sedan at the intersection of North Meadows Drive and Newmont Drive. Below, the APD Public Information Office provided this official statement:
“A preliminary investigation revealed that after the initial impact, the SUV kept going and crashed into two pickup trucks parked in a nearby duplex.
A child, Maria Monserrat Dubon-Nava, was walking in between the two parked trucks when she was struck. Dubon-Nava died at the scene.
The driver of the SUV, Miguel Diaz, initially left the scene of the crash but later returned. Diaz was arrested for an Accident Involving Injury- 2nd Degree Felony. The driver of the sedan involved in the first crash also left the scene.
This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 9th fatal crash of 2023, resulting in nine fatalities for the year. On the date of this crash in 2022, there were a total of five fatal crashes that resulted in six deaths.”
