Type of accident

Multi-Vehicle Incident

Official Report From The City of Austin & The APD Public Information Office

Austin, Texas – Chaos erupted on the streets of Austin last night as several reports came in of people driving recklessly throughout the city. At 9:01 p.m., a caller reported that five vehicles were blocking the intersection of Barton Springs Road and South Lamar Boulevard. Within minutes, multiple 911 calls flooded in reporting that several vehicles were racing and circling the intersection while running red lights and blocking traffic. Fireworks were also being shot into the air.

Due to no units being nearby at the time, officers arrived at the scene at 9:23 p.m. The crowd dispersed and officers cleared the intersection by 9:46 p.m. However, this was just the beginning as APD continued to monitor the Car Club as it headed North.

At 10:27 p.m., an officer reported that the car club had reached North Interstate 35 Service Road / East Anderson where multiple vehicles began driving recklessly once again. Officers managed to disperse the crowd but at 12:52 a.m., they were called to Berkman Drive and Barbara Jordan Boulevard due to multiple 911 calls for service.

The first officer arrived at this location at 12:58 a.m. where they reported glass bottles being thrown. The crowd was dispersed by 1:07 a.m. but just half an hour later, more calls came in stating that vehicles were blocking Metric Boulevard/Braker Lane intersection while doing donuts and starting fires.

The crowd was finally dispersed at 1:56 a.m. but not before rocks and bottles were thrown at officers with one sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. Patrol vehicles also sustained damage from rocks and bottles being thrown.

Two people were arrested for evading arrest while investigations into these incidents continue.

In response to these events, APD has stated that they are committed to ending this conduct and will enforce arrests for lawbreaking behavior like this in order to ensure community safety. For further details, you can continue reading the official APD report.
